What is Kadhampa?
Kadhampa refers to the Buddha’s instructional teachings, encompassing both Mahayana and Hinayana doctrines (words of awakening). These teachings, as commanded by the Buddha, provide comprehensive guidance for sentient beings to Enlightenment . Not a single word is redundant, and every teaching serves as a suitable path for all beings to attain Enlightenment.
The Origin of Kadhampa
During a time of Buddhist decline in Tibet, the Tibetan kings Hui Guang and Bodhi Guang (uncle and nephew) were deeply concerned. They observed that many Tibetan masters lacked proper methods to cultivate bodhicitta (the spirit of enlightenment, leading to a waste of human potential and spiritual opportunities. To address this, the kings decided to invite a renowned Indian master to bring correct awakening teachings to Tibet. Their goal was to reinvigorate Buddhism, provide proper guidance for spiritual practitioners, and help beings quickly transcend the three realms or six realms to attain supreme bodhicitta.
Founder of Kadhampa
The founder of Kadhampa is the great Indian master Atisha, a Bangzheda (a scholar adept in the five wisdoms). On June 8th of the Tibetan calendar in the year of Shuima (1042), Atisha completed his seminal work, The Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment, marking the official establishment of the Kadhampa tradition.
Purpose of the Temple
• To spread and promote Buddhism, ensuring its continuity in the world.
• To provide Buddhism teachings, open to public worship to Buddha, contemplation, practice, understand precepts, meditation, and cultivate wisdom.
The Buddha’s teachings aim to:
• Guide people to identify what to adopt or what to let go.
• Bring happiness and joy to life, eliminate suffering, benefit to others, and achieve liberation (become a noble being).
《Lotus Sutra 》 states that those who construct temples, pagodas, or statues will see countless Buddhas, achieve enlightenment, and help liberate countless beings.
The 《Ksitigarbha Sutra 》emphasizes that even small virtuous deeds related to the Dharma yield immeasurable benefits.
The 《Abhidharmakosha 》highlights that building a Buddha hall is one of the most meritorious acts. Supporting and rejoicing in such efforts ensures future spiritual benefits from all practices undertaken in the temple.
Ten Merits of Supporting Temple Construction (Lotus Sutra)
1. Past evil deeds are reduced or eliminated.
2. Protection from deities ensures misfortune turns into good fortune.
3. Obstacles and vengeful suffering are avoided.
4. Protection from demons and evil spirits.
5. Freedom from troubles and ignorance.
6. Abundant and enduring blessings and fortune.
7. Actions and words bring happiness to people and gods.
8. Daily growth in merit and wisdom.
9. Rebirth in a dignified, fortunate human life.
10. Rebirth in a pure land, leading to enlightenment and Buddhahood.
The Merit of Rejoicing in Good Deeds
The Buddha taught that rejoicing in others’ virtuous deeds with a sincere heart generates the same blessings as performing those deeds yourself.
